Default Gas gauge stuck on E

I haven't looked under the car yet to check the wiring (and probably won't until the weather warms up). I just want to know if the fuel level sender is part of the pump assembly or is another hole and whether I have to drop the tank to get to it or not. This is for my 1988 MGM.

if you crawl under the car and look at tank... it faces the rear diff. you dont have to drop tank to change float if needed. the pump IS separate and located on side not accessile unless you drop tank. if you remove the sending unit, get new o ring and float from ford if possible and cost will be under $10. do tihs with tank close to half full or less to avoid gas bath

hopefully it just needs a new float. I'll probably have to wait until warm weather returns before I can work on it though. That's the info I needed. Thanks.
